What the heck is Martha’s Vineyard Mixed Terrain?
The term “gravel ride” has as many different definitions as “gravel bike” which can lead to confusion, disappointment and spilled coffee. I’ve always used the term mixed-terrain and I think that word perfectly conveys the style of riding on this island. It varies. A lot. Pick a route, any route; and you will likely ride a combination of empty easy singletrack, a dirt backroad, some paved bike path and sharing the road on a well used, shoulderless road (don’t worry, we avoid those as much as possible!) That said, most “gravel bikes” would be very at home in this terrain, as would 1990’s hardtail mountain bikes. Some may feel like they are underbiking some of these routes, and those feelings are valid. Adventure and fun isn’t for everybody!
Spicy 3 Lighthouse Tour mixed terrain route Three lighthouses in three different towns! Simply calling this a gravel route would be unfair and inaccurate. It is a typical Martha’s Vineyard mixed terrain route with dirt roads, backroads, busy roads, doubletrack, easy singletrack and everything in between. Ride it straight through or take the day to enjoy the scenery and eat and snack along the way.
